Nurse Aides are in the front line and most important member in caring for health care units and nursing homes all over the country. They offer critical services for everyday care of the bedside patients including feeding, dressing, exercises, changing bed linen and bathing. Due to such compassionate and critical responsibilities of caring patients, CNA are required to undertake extensive class room and clinical training before they are certified as CNA.

Though different states have stipulated separate training duration hours for CNA programs, but all should follow minimum stipulation prescribed by the federal authority. But states like New York has set much higher training hour period of 100 hours, which is much higher than required by the federal authority.

The State Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for implementing both State and Federal laws regarding the training and certification of nurse aides in New York. To be a successful CNA in New York, DOH requires that an individual to complete a State approved training program and pass a competency exam. Oversight of the training programs is split between the DOH and the Department of Education (DOE).

DOH looks after the programs provides by nursing homes, whereas DOE has been entrusted with the responsibilities for the programs provided by other organizations like nonprofit organizations, proprietary schools, high school and adult education programs. The certification is valid for 2 years only and review has to be done after stipulated 2 year time period.  But for both agencies has made it mandatory for the renewal of certification, that an aide must have worked at least seven hours in the past two years. No additional training or special skills is required at any point in a nurse aide’s career for recertification.

Tuition fee for the course runs to $2000 & more and no uniform curriculum is followed.
