Certified Nurse Aide or Certified Nursing assistant (CNA) can be defined as a person or individual, who have completed State approved certified nursing assistant program. After completion of CNA training program, such individuals are certified as Nursing Assistant or tested Nursing Aide and placed on the State registry of nurse aides. The main function of Certified Nurse Aide is to provide health care and bed side care to the patients under the supervision of License Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. Certified Nurse Assistant can work in hospitals, home care, health clinics and so on for nourishing and attending to the daily health care of the patients.

In America each State has formulated their own training hours for Nursing Assistant Training but it is necessary that they meet the federal requirement of minimum 75 hours training and prescribed courses.

Nurse Aide Training Programs in Washington state is regulated by two distinct agencies, who also share the responsibilities and they are :
·        Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS)
·        Department of Health (DOH)
The main duty of Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is to check that the nurse aides who seek employment in nursing homes are indeed qualified by meeting the federal requirements. This department also has the responsibility to supervise and approve CNA Program and courses along with establishing testing criteria for the nurse assistant state examination.

The role of the Department of Health is to ensure that the certified nurse assistant meets the state requirements that are needed for nursing aide employment. Once the student passes nursing aide exam, this agency issues the nursing assistant certificate.

The average earning for CNA during 2008 was $ 250, 00 per year in a nursing home.
