Certified Nurse Aides has the responsibilities to carry out and provide everyday nursing care to patients in long term care units, hospitals, nursing homes and health centers, under the supervision of Certified Licensed Nurse. To be a certified nursing assistant, a nursing aide should complete state and federal authority stipulated nursing training programs, which includes classroom and hand on clinical trainings programs. After successful completion of training program, the nursing aide or nursing student will have appear for state approved competency evaluation test, which will make him/her eligible for certification, if such individual clears the evaluation exam.

In Okalahoma, the Nurse Aide Registry maintains a complete listing of all certified nurse aides. This program was created through a federal mandate and regulations dated September 1991. The duties of nurse aide registry include:
·        Review, approve and disapprove Nursing Aide Training Programs and Curriculum.
·        Review, approve and disapprove nursing aide competency evaluation tests.
·        Maintain and develop Nursing Aide Registry
·        Maintain and check Abuse, CNA, offer Public education and develop rules, policies, procedures, applications and forms necessary to implement the program.

In Okalahoma, the responsibility to approve CNA program lies with Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH).
Any CNA, who has completed Nursing Aide program from state approved nursing school or certified from specific state, can ask for the reciprocity from OSDH to waive the necessity of attending OK CNA Training program or permission grant to work legally in any hospitals or long term care units in Okalahoma.
Certification Requirements and Classes Availability:

• 120 hours of total training including classroom and hand on clinical.
• A classroom training component
• A clinical training component
• 4 weeks of daytime attendance or ten weeks of evening classes.
• Weekend only CNA training program is also available.

CNA Curriculum

Nursing aide should undergo training on Classroom, clinical programs and interpersonal skills.

Classroom Learnings:

• Basic nursing skills
• Restorative care
• Emergency procedures
• Patients’ rights
• Communication skills

During classroom learning, the students are prevented to take actual care or get in contact with the patients. After successful completion of classroom training, the nursing aide student can get in contact with patient for clinical hand on trainings, under the strict supervision of certified nurse.

OK CNA program (Classroom and Clinical) prepares the nursing student for competency evaluation test and for certification. After completing the training programs and passing the competency test, a nursing aide is certified and included in the CNA Registry, which allows the CNA to work legally in long term care units, Nursing homes and other health centers.
