Nurse Aide Training Programs in Kentucky

Although, nurse aides in Kentucky are often referred to as “Certified Nurse Aides “, the correct title for a nurse aide listed on the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry is “State Registered Nurse Aide” (SRNA).
The Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry began in October 1990 after the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) became law. The Nurse Aide Registry has two main functions:

  • To maintain a list of qualified nurse aides.
  • To maintain a list of aides who have abused residents in facilities. A facility must verify if an individual has abused a resident in a long-term care facility before the aide can be hired by the facility.

In Kentucky, a nurse aide to work legally in any long term care units, hospitals and health care centers, should complete state and federal approved training programs and pass competency evaluation tests. The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) is the entity in charge of creating the standard template and bears responsibility for the final written or oral certification examination and the skill demonstration aspect of the competency evaluation.

All the questions included in the test are created according to the state-approved SRNA curriculum, under the guidance of the Nurse Aide Training Advisory Committee. After successfully passing the competency evaluation test, nursing aide is placed on the Kentucky nurse aide registry.

The basic course consists of a minimum of seventy-five (75) hours with a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of supervised practical training. Supervised practical training means training in a laboratory or other setting in which the trainee demonstrates knowledge while performing task on an individual under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.

A SRNA can keep registration in an active status if he/she were employed in a hospital for at least 8 hours for monetary benefit in a nursing related capacity during a two-year period and produce satisfactory evidence of having worked for pay.  If SRNA meets this requirement, she is eligible for registration renewal and do not have to be retested. SRNAs must renew their registration every two years.

A nurse aide whose name is on another State’s Nurse Aid Registry may be granted reciprocity in Kentucky.  The individual may be deemed competent for employment in a nursing facility based upon written verification from the agency that maintains the involved State’s Nurse Aide Registry.
