Nurse Aide Training Programs in Iowa
If you think high school diploma is necessary for nursing aide job in Iowa, and then you can be assured that a high school diploma generally is not required for jobs as home health aides. Hospitals or nursing homes may require previous experience as a nursing aide or home health aide.
Hospitals, health care centers and long term care units in Iowa often hire inexperienced workers, who must complete a minimum of 75 hours of mandatory training, consisting of classroom and clinical laboratory training, under the supervision of registered nurse, and pass a competency evaluation test as part of a State-approved training program within four months of their employment. Students or aides who completes the training and clears the CNA exam is known as certified nurse assistants (CNA) and are placed on the State registry of nursing aides.
In Iowa, Nursing and psychiatric aide training is offered in high schools, vocational-technical centers, long term nursing care facilities and some community colleges. The course covers nutrition, anatomy, physiology, body functioning, interpersonal skills, infection control and resident rights. Personal care skills, such as grooming of patients are also taught as a part of training curriculum.
Some long term care units, where the newly hired nursing aide is employed also provide classroom instruction, while others are instructed by a licensed nurse or an experienced aide. Such training may last from several days to a few months.
The CNA training program should follow the guidelines as formulated by the federal agency for certification. The passing of competency exam is mandatory for certification and regular employment in hospitals, health care centers and nursing homes. The National Association for Home Care offers national certification for home health aides. The certification is a voluntary demonstration that the individual has met industry standards.
The entry level nursing aides after additional formal training or education can enter other health occupations, which includes licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, and medical assistant as career advancements.
