Nurse Aide Training Programs in Colorado must follow the provision of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, which mandates all states to regulate and approve Certified Nursing Training Programs.
In the state of Colorado, nursing aide certification programs is supervised and managed by the Board of Nursing (through the Department of Regulatory Agencies) throughout the State of Colorado.

It is necessary that the nursing Aide should meet following CNA training criteria to work legally in the hospitals, nursing homes, long term care units and other health centers.

• Successfully complete a state-approved CNA training program
• Pass the state competency examination (which consists of both a skills assessment and a written component)
• Pass a criminal history background check

The nursing aide from other state bearing an active CNA license of that state can apply for endorsement through the Board of Nursing. In addition, those who either completed a state-approved training program in another state or graduated from an accredited nursing program, without having attained CNA certification, can apply to take the CNA competency examination. For such nursing aides, it is not necessary to attend a Colorado CNA program.

In Colorado the nursing aide student should complete 80 hours of classroom and a clinical, hands-on combined learning for certification.

For classroom learning component, the student is instructed about varieties of medications and nursing skills in addition of:

• Restorative care
• Basic nursing care
• Emergency procedures
• Infection control
• Mental health awareness
• Patients’ rights
• Interpersonal skills

The nursing aide students are not allowed to get into direct contact with residents during classroom learning. But during clinical component, the nursing aide has the opportunity to work with patients under the strict supervision of program coordinator or registered nurse as necessitated by Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987.

Colorado nursing students who complete an approved CNA certification program, and who then pass the state competency evaluation examination, are eligible to be placed upon the official registry of licensed nurse aides and allowed to work legally in hospitals, nursing homes and long term care unit as CNA.
