In California, nursing aide certification is managed by California Department of Public Health’s Aide and Technician Certification Section (ATCS), CNA/HHA/CHT Certification Unit. It is the responsibility of ATCS to approve CNA programs offered through colleges, adult education programs, facilities and occupational training centers. It is necessary for the students to find the training centers approved by ATCS, to become eligible to sit for the competency evaluation test and getting certification.

CNA programs approved by ATCS are for duration of 50 hours classroom learning and 100 hours of clinical training. The classroom and clinical training covers all important standards and learning, which is necessary for CNA to look after everyday need of patients, utilizing proper infection control standards, basic patient care training, medical terminology, taking vital signs, preparing simple dressing, and overall patient hygiene and other related training. The cost for CNA programs in California is approximately $600 to $1000, which includes everything, such as uniform, text books etc.

The nursing aide or students, who are willing to work in hospitals and long term care units but are unable to meet certification program expenses, can opt for the sponsorship from their employer or long term care units with a pledge to work in the specific health care unit, after successful completion of the CNA program and competency evaluation tests. The students can also avail the grants and scholarships offered by federal and state authorities for such training programs.

The salary for successful CNA ranges from $19,000 to over $36,500 annually or a mean hourly rate of $13.04 according to the California Employment Development Department, depending on experience, prior education, location and other factors.

California offers ample employment opportunities to fresh CNA as, The California Employment Development Department projects a 21.7% increase in the demand for certified nursing aides, between 2006 and 2016 and an average of 3080 job openings each year.
