Since 1987, federal authorities have made it mandatory for every state in America to both approve CNA training programs and maintain a registry of all licensed Certified Nursing Assistants. Only Illinois certified nursing aides can work as licensed CNA in Illinois.

Illinois Requirements for CNA

Students not having nursing backgrounds needs to meet following requirements to work as CNA:

• Clear a criminal background check
• Complete a CNA Illinois training program
• Pass an official CNA competency examination or test
• Apply to be placed on the state’s Health Care Worker Registry

Those students who have either graduated from an accredited nursing program or have been licensed as a CNA in another state can waive the requirement to complete a CNA in Illinois program.

In Illinois, the training for Certified Nursing Courses is provided in nursing homes, adult institutes, community centers or colleges and schools.

CNA Training Program details:

Any student willing to appear for CNA test should completed less than 150 hours of both class room and clinical training under the supervision of certified nurse. The students are taught about body anatomy, basic nursing skills, physiology, personal care skills, resident’s rights and mental health needs.

After completion of CNA training program, the student can sit for state approved CNA competency examination. The students who clear and meet the required eligibility of certified nursing aide are approved as Certified Nursing Assistant and can work as CAN in the state of Illinois.

It is also necessary for the students to remember that at present Illinois does not recognize any fully online certification; hence it is very much advisable to enquire before undertaking any fully online training programs.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has the responsibility to approve and maintains the many different CNA certification Illinois programs available throughout the state.
