The role of the Certified Nurse Aide is to provide for the daily care, nursing, comfort, safety and health needs of the patients. The CNA is one of the vital members of the nursing or health care team that offers cares and safety to the patients.
The basic duties of CNA is to read chart notes, check and report blood pressures, respiration, pulses and temperature of the patient. They also assist the patient in walking, dressing, performing exercises, eating and drinking. They help in the movement of patients by wheel chair, look after dressings, keep report of their liquid and food intake including changing of linens and bed preparations.
CNA Training Classes in Indiana
There are various training facilities like high schools, career schools & colleges, technical schools and long term care facilities, who offer free CNA training classes. The students attending these training classes should complete State approve CNA training programs and pass competency evaluation tests. After successful completion of their training classes and award of Certified Nurse Aide certificate, they can work as a member of medical team in hospitals, health care centers, Nursing Homes, Home Care and other facilities providing health care to the patients.
It is also noteworthy to note that although, CNAs in Indiana work in various healths related facilities but majority of them are associated with long term care units. Although they work in hospitals and sometimes for private health agencies, the long term care field is still most commonly associated workplace for Indiana’s CNAs.
The basic requirement of Certified Nurse Assistant training classes in Indiana is 30 hours of lecture based classroom instructions and 75 hours of clinical practical training. The State of Indiana has made it necessary that potential CNA should undergo trainings at facilities approved by them and the list of such training programs can be obtained from State Regulatory Services site.
The individual willing to work in the hospitals but unable to meet their training classes expenses, can opt for scholarship, sponsorship from long term care units, grants and assistance from non profit organizations.
