Any person or individual, who have completed State approved Certified nursing assistant program is known as Certified Nurse Aide or Certified Nursing assistant (CAN). The Nursing Assistant program includes 50 hours of theory and 100 hours of supervised clinical trainings. The aides after completion of training program are certified as Nursing Assistant or tested Nursing Aide and placed on the State registry of nurse aides.

Their main function after completion of certified nursing training, is to assist patients with health care needs, offers bedside care and follows nursing procedures under the active supervision of License Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. One time completion of Nurse Training program is not enough in United States but to maintain their certification, Nursing Aide should complete 48 hours of continuing education, every 24 months.

Nurse Aides are very important part of a health care team, which consists of many personnel outside nurses in any hospital or extended care facilities. It is the duty of the CNA to offer routine care, so the nurses can provide care that can be performed by them only as outlined by each state’s Nurse Practice Act.

The Certified Nurse Aide should be very skilled with her actual duties performance but must also be capable to observe the condition of the patient and report acquired information back to the nurse. This becomes more necessary because Nurses due to various superior responsibilities, can not spend enough time in the room of patients to find out the regular condition of the patient. It can be truthfully said that Nursing Aides are nurse’s ears and eyes.

The basic duties of Certified Nursing Aides can be summed up as follows:

• Provide aid and care to patients in hospital bed.
• Minimize or remove patients suffering with compassion, tender care and nursing skill.

Other important responsibilities include:

• Help bed ridden patients to turn and move to prevent from bed sores.
• Attend patients call
• Feed the patients, who are not able to feed on their own.
• Keep strict vigil on the condition of the patient
• Maintain record and observe their liquid and food intake, check pulse beating, temperature and blood pressure.
• Assist movements of patient for exercises, walking, moving in and out of the bed.
• Inform in depth about patients habits and conditions to next shift professional.
• Take care of nursing and dressing.
• Administer liquids like glucose, injection and medications.
• Get ready patients for physical examination, treatment, surgery and check ups.
• Help patients on stretcher and wheel chair for taking to separate units for treatments.
• Change the bed cover, linen and clean the room.
• Keep in continuous touch with doctors and nurses by reporting condition of the patient.

Nursing Aide profession is very noble provided you have needed compassion and tender touch. You must be able to grasp the emergency situations and stay calm in stressful situations.
