Certification Test to become Certified Nursing Assistant

With the aim of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, you will have to go through a nursing assistant training course and then appear and pass in the state level certification exam administered by State Board of Nursing. This exam comprises of two parts- theory and hands-on skills assessment. The registration for this test should be done in the state you want to work in, as the license is finally issued by the state only.

Mostly this test is being taken in group. You must appear in the written test first, where every candidate will give the exam at the same time. There will be around 100 multiple choice questions in this test paper, with a time limit of 2 hours to complete them. The written exam usually consists of patient care and monitoring, laboratory and testing procedures, protocols and documentation and record keeping.

CNA training covers almost everything expected to be asked in the theoretical exam. It is recommended that you revise your class notes, charts and handouts before attempting this written test, especially when you are not appearing in it right after the completion of your training course. Once the written portion is finished, the invigilator collects the answer sheets and the candidates are called individually to perform the hands-on skills test one by one. In the skills test you may be asked to accompany a “model” or aide with you to assist you with practical assessment. This person would act as a dummy patient for you, on whom you will demonstrate your hands-on skills. The specifics of the practical test will differ and will be diverse from person to person. Until and unless you confront the actual test, you won’t come to know which skill they are going to give you to perform.

The skills test wraps up most of the general hands-on skills you will come across. It might involve demonstration of taking vital signs like pulse, blood pressure, respiration etc. It may also include a demo of proper way of bed making with and without the patient, movement and ambulation of the patient, assisting a patient with dressing, feeding and moving with wheelchair, and retorting immediately to emergencies like choking etc.

The results will not come right then and there just after the completion of the test, however it will be mailed to you soon. The key to pass this test effortlessly is only your attention in the training class, understanding of the whole curriculum and the revision done by you of the theory part before taking the test. Once the certification is earned, you are entitled to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and can work at any nursing home, hospital, extended care facility, or even patient’s own home.
