The South Dakota Board of Nursing is the Agency designated by the South Dakota Department of Health For approval of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program, whether the training is offered by a licensed nursing home or by a non-nursing home health center. The board may provide approval for the course for a maximum of two years. After the ending of approval period, the organization must apply for renewal and to grant review, the board may conduct an unannounced visit to determine compliance with requirements. After satisfying with the compliances, the board issues further approvals.

The program coordinator is responsible for providing guidance and general supervision of the nurse aide training program. The program coordinator should be registered nurse, with 2 years of nursing experience in long term care unit.

The nurse aide training program must address the medical, psychosocial, physical, and environmental needs of the patients or residents served by the facility. The program must consist of at least 75 hours of classroom and clinical instruction including thirty-five (35) clinical hours when each student participates in clinical practice under the supervision of a registered or licensed nurse. The classes are kept small, with a minimum of four students per class; to give each student individualized attention and optimal preparation for the South Dakota nurse aide certification exam. The average salary for a nurse aide in South Dakota is approximately $25,000.
