Nurse Aide Training Programs in Missouri must follow the provision of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, which mandates all states to regulate and approve Certified Nursing Training Programs.

While training programs may vary slightly depending upon the educational provider, all state-approved programs must contain the following minimum learning elements, which is also necessity of federal requirements:

• 75 hours of classroom study
• 100 hours of clinical, hands-on training
• Be taught by a licensed nurse

Nursing students learn a number of important skills and content areas in the classroom component, including the following:

• Basic nursing care
• Fire safety and disaster training
• Residents’ rights
• Social and psychological care
• Mental health care
• Infection control
• Restorative care

To work legally as a CNA in a long term care unit, nursing homes and health care centers, a nourishing aid should meet below given nurse training criteria:

• Successfully complete a state-approved CNA MO certification program
• Pass a state-administered CNA competency examination
• Submit to and pass a criminal history background check

Those who have been certified as a nurse aide in another state, as well as those who have either been licensed as a nurse or completed an academic nursing degree program, can challenge the DHSS to have the Missouri training program requirement waived.

DHSS approved CNA training courses are offered by various, adult education centers, high schools, community colleges, technical intuitions and long term care centers.

After successful completion of training and clearing of competency evaluation tests, a CNA is added into the Missouri state CNAMO registry and is authorized to work in various health care units, nursing homes and long term care facilities.
