CNA Training Programs in Hawaii

As required by the Federal Regulations, the Medicaid Agency bears the responsibility to establish the curriculum requirements for State certification of Nurse Aide Training Programs (NATPs) and formulate the curriculam of the Competency Evaluation Program in Hawaii. Medicaid Agency also determines, if NATP is qualified to be certified and work legally in long term care units, hospitals and nursing homes. After receiving due certification, Office of Heath Care Assurance (the State survey agency), as demanded by the federal regulation, establishes, whether the requirements to get the certification as prescribed by the Medicaid Agency are duly met.

In Hawaii, to get the certification a nursing aide should complete 100 hours of learning, including:

30 hours classroom instructions, of which minimum 16 hours must be spent on the following field prior to getting direct contact with actual patients. These trainings are:

  • Communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Infection control
  • Safety/emergency procedures, including the Heimlich maneuver;
  • Understanding and promoting residents’ (patients’) rights; and
  • Respecting residents’ (patients’) rights.

Other than these trainings, there are other classroom activities also, which are instructed to nursing aide trainee to access their competency to provide minimum quality nurse aides services and these instructions include:

  • Introduction to the health care delivery system in Hawaii with special emphasis on agencies and facilities that care for the aged;
  • Appropriate conduct, language, and dress;
  • General preventive health care with emphasis on controlling the spread of infections.

The clinical training segments are for 70 hours duration, which are supervised practical trainings in a laboratory or in any other facility to demonstrate skills learned in classroom learning and are performed under the strict supervision of Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

The clinical Training includes minimum learning of:

  • Basic nursing skills—30 hours minimum;
  • Basic personal care skills—30 hours minimum;
  • Basic restorative services—10 hours minimum.

Those with an active CNA registration in another state and wish to relocate in Hawaii must contact the Med-QUEST applications office for reciprocity. Even nurse aides who are either enrolled in an accredited nursing degree program or who have graduated from an accredited nursing program should contact Med-QUEST to find out, if they qualify for a CNA examination exemption.

The median salary for CNA in Hawaii is approximately $ 29,500 to $ 39,000 and average hourly earning can be approximately $15 to $ 20 depending upon the employer and experience.
