CNA Exam in Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, any CNA student willing to appear for the NNAAP Examination, must complete state and OBRA/87 approved Wisconsin Department of Health services. The student should pass the certification test within two years of completion of training program. If CNA student is unable to pass the exam, within this period then, he/she will have to get re- training to take the exam again.

Wisconsin Department of Health services have contracted with Pearson VUE to develop, assess, and inform the results of the NNAAP Examination and to maintain Wisconsin Nurse Aide registry. The Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Service (NACES) jointly works with Pearson VUE to schedule and mange the examination. To meet the nurse aide and personal aide evaluation requirement of federal and state laws and regulations, the NNAAP was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc., (NCSBN).

A candidate willing to take NNAAP Exam, should complete an  Application for Registration by Competency Examination form with completed application, test fees, social security card, a photo ID and nursing training completion certificate should be submitted to NACES.

Applications should be sent to American Red Cross, WI NNAAP, PO Box 5875, Harrisburg, PA 17110, in one envelope together with a copy of Nursing program Completion Certificate and appropriate exam fee.

NNAAP Examination consists of two parts, written/oral test and clinical or skill evaluation test. The reason for the NNAAP exam is to evaluate the learning and knowledge of the entry level CNA in taking effective, competent and safety care of the residents. The passing of test also provides them certification and listing with Wisconsin Board of Nursing, which makes them eligible to work as CNA in hospitals, long term care units and health centers.

Candidate is offered a choice of three attempts to pass the test and failure even after three attempts, makes it necessary to undertake entire training program once again.

During exam day the candidate should bring following necessities:

  • 2 nos. Signature Identification Form, one of which must be photo identification (driver’s license, government-issued photo identification, photo credit card, passport, or alien registration card)
  • No. 2 sharpened pencils
  • Eraser
  • Your Social Security number
  • Watch with a second hand

Written/Oral Examination (70 questions)

  • 60 multiple choice questions
  • 10 reading comprehension questions
  • Questions are provided on a cassette tape for listening
  • For oral test, request must be made along with the application
  • Time limit 2 hours

Personal Care Assistant Written test consists of 60 multi-choice questions. Oral Test is not available for these candidates.

Written test is based on Physical Care Skills, Psychosocial Care Skills and Role of the Nurse Aide along with other learning.

Skill Test

  • 5 randomly selected skills performance
  • Time limit is 25 minutes
  • Nursing Assistant Evaluator assess the skill performance of the candidate and rate accordingly
  • Successful demonstration of skills passes candidate’s skill evaluation

Skill test are performed on other student known as client and following skills are to be performed:

Hand Washing is one skill out of 5 skills, that has to be performed and Measurement Recording is one skill from rest 4 skills will have to be performed by the candidate.

Blood Pressure Measurement, Hand Washing, Counts and Recording of Radial Pulse, Respiration Recording, Feeding and Bed Bath to the client, Bed Making, Movement of the patient, Denture, Mouth and Perennial care to patient, proper use of Bed Pan, Donning and Removing PPE (Gown and Gloves), Client Dressing and so on.

The candidate can ask for rescheduling of the exam for following reasons, which are permissible:

• Ailment/Illness of candidate or his/her family member

• Death in the family

• Disabling traffic accident

• Court appearance or jury duty

• Military duty

• Weather emergency

Any candidate getting employment within 12 months, as a nurse aide by a Medicaid Nursing Facility or Medicare is eligible for the reimbursement of the training and competency evaluation fees through the facility.
