CNA Exam in Minnesota

In Minnesota, any CNA student willing to appear for the NNAAP or the NA/HHA Examination for Certification, must complete state and OBRA/87 approved, Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), nursing assistant/Home Health Aide Training Program.

Minnesota Department of Health (ADH) has contracted with Pearson VUE to jointly develop a testing program called the NA/HHA Combined Program, which provides a Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide certification. This combined program consists of NA/HHA Written Examination together with NNAAP Skill Evaluation. The candidate should successfully complete Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide training program for the eligibility to sit for the exam.

To appear for the NNAAP or NA/HHA Certification test, the candidate should meet following conditions for eligibility:

  • Nursing Assistant Candidate, who has completed state approved CAN training program in last two years.
  • Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Candidate, who has completed a state-approved nursing assistant/ home health aide training program within the past two (2) years.
  • Home Health Aide Candidate listed with Minnesota Nurse Aide Registry
  • Test-Out Candidate

A candidate willing to take NA/HHA Combined Program test, should complete an  Application for Registration by Competency Examination form with completed application, test fees, social security card, a photo ID and nursing training completion certificate.

ADA accommodation is also available with prior information. Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf (TDD) is also provided to assist deaf and hearing-impaired candidates.

NNAAP or NA/HHA Combined Program test consists of two parts, written/oral test and clinical or skill evaluation test. The reason for the NNAAP or NA/HHA Combined Program test exam is to evaluate the learning and knowledge of the CNA/Home Health Aide in taking effective, competent and safety care of the residents. The passing of test also provides them certification and listing with Minnesota Board of Nursing, which makes them eligible to work as CNA/HHA in hospitals, long term care units, Home settings and health centers.

NA/HHA Written Examination

  • Consist of 70 questions
  • 60 multiple choice questions
  • 10 reading comprehension questions
  • Questions are provided on a cassette tape for listening
  • For oral test, request must be made along with the application
  • Time limit 2 hours

The test is based on Physical Care Skills, Psychosocial Care Skills, Unique Duties of the Home Health Aide and Role of the Home Health Aide along with other learning.

NAAPP Skill Test

  • 5 randomly selected skills performance
  • Time limit is 25 minutes
  • Nursing Assistant Evaluator assess the skill performance of the candidate and rate accordingly
  • Successful demonstration of skills passes candidate’s skill evaluation

Skill test are performed on other student known as client and following skills are to be performed:

Hand Washing is one skill out of 5 skills, that has to be performed and Measurement Recording is one skill from rest 4 skills will have to be performed by the candidate.

Other skills includes Feeding and Bed Bath to the client, Bed Making, Movement of the patient, Denture, Mouth and Perennial care to patient, proper use of Bed Pan, Donning and Removing PPE (Gown and Gloves), Client Dressing, Applies One Knee-High Elastic Stocking, Assists to Ambulate using Transfer Belt, Counts and Records Radial Pulse, Counts and Records Respirations, Dress Client with one weak arm and so on.

The candidate can ask for rescheduling of the exam for following reasons, which are permissible:

• Ailment/Illness of candidate or his/her family member

• Death in the family

• Disabling traffic accident

• Court appearance or jury duty

• Military duty

• Weather emergency

Any candidate getting employment within 12 months, as a nurse aide by a Medicaid Nursing Facility or Medicare is eligible for the reimbursement of the training and competency evaluation fees through the facility.
