Why is Chemistry Important to Nursing?
If we think about nursing in practical term then the first description that comes to our mind is ‘ nursing is caring or looking after an ailing person, offering nursing services that can minimize his/her suffering.
In broader aspect, a nursing professional gets the formal education and training in arts and science of nursing. It is not just getting learning in these fields but professional nursing covers various other education chapters including Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. The main aim of these learning in different field is to assist and prepare nursing personnel help recover and maintenance of the resident’s health.
Today we come across two types of nurses and they are 1. Licensed Practical Nurses and other is Registered Nurse. In the present time to reflect the education preparedness aspect of the nursing professional, Registered Nurses are further classified as Professional and Technical nurses.
Nurses working in community surroundings perform their duties for the prevention of ailments through the education they have learned and community programs relating to containment of violence, obesity, transmittable diseases, use of tobacco and smoking. In lieu of this, they also offer education on maternal – child, which is one of the major health related problem in the modern era. Few nurses have greatly contributed to the health research through their independent working.
Many nurses obtain Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in nursing and after completing their education they start working as nursing professionals in long term care units or hospitals, instructors in public field.
Along with other education, chemistry also has made great contribution to nursing.
In any nursing profession, patients urine testing, blood tests, saliva testing and for various other testing is paramount and Chemistry research has developed the chemicals and methods to be used in testing. Even chemistry research has facilitated multiple medications, for pain relieving and other ailment cure, generally prescribed by the physicians. The importance of Chemistry is also evident for evaluating the nutrient and energy content of the food, which helps to protect the health of mankind from harmful bacteria. Using chemistry we can evaluate the nutrition content of our food as well as its energy content; and protect us from harmful bacteria.
In the similar way, through BioChemistry research it is known that emotions and feelings are all caused by chemical reaction in our body and proper remedies have been introduced to alter depression or psychosis with some really good medications.
